I live in an area with no cell phone service but I think I'll get an Intel phone and a base station for a connection. Does anyone here use one and how much delay does it add?

If you're talking about WiFi, you can't make calls over that. However, you can use unlimited data off of WiFi, but then you have a handheld computer, not a phone.

None. I think you are looking for a femtocell (connects to broadband and transmits carrier signals). The one from ATT costs $150. They all have one. I use it in the contained metal building of my business. I found a 2nd one for my remote mountain house on Craigs list for $35. No additional cost on your cellular plan...

A coworker has one of these with AT&T at his home. He gets good reception everywhere except for his home. He says that the device works quite well.

We use Google Chat (audio) quite a bit for making phone calls. We really don't use our landline for making calls anymore.

I recently got a Verizon MiFi which provides 4G WiFi service. I'm working remotely five days a week now and this thing allows me to work just about anywhere. It costs $56/month for the device and service (company will pick up the costs). I suppose that I could make phone calls off of it too.

We had an outage with our broadband at home recently and we just used the MiFi until service came back. The 4G runs faster than our old DSL connection.
