I dont live in Middle America, so I can't comment on the value of two chain restaurants, whether the opinion of one high end chinese restaurant or a fast food chain will fail. I was thinking more of local restaurants in a metropolitan area.
When gas prices go up, families make decisions to cut costs. Yes some families can go to fancy restaurants (insert Cheesecake factory or whatever you deem appropriate) and others cut their entertainment budget. When I was a teenager, gas was .98 for premium, and I had a part time job that paid for my expenses. This economy is different. Parents have new financial strains like phone bills, and it may be more effective to talk to their kids and say "please don't text and drive." Good parenting still holds value in America. Big brother and monitoring your kids social media will only make them rebel in early adulthood.
