Having been in the military I know first hand that there are lots of gays in the military. The military has always depended on gay people. In other countries gays serve openly without problem. As the US military gets more desperate for quality recruits, they'd better get over their hang-ups. However the current commander in chief is the most openly homophobic president in history, so I'm not expecting any changes soon.

I have very mixed feelings about lifting the ban. On the one hand it's the right thing to do, and would be a major step toward equality for gays in America. On the other hand I would see it as an act of desperation on the part of the military as a result of the Iraq misadventure which I deplore. The fact that lifting the ban is being considered now is no coincidence. Sending more people to die for a mistake is not my idea of progress.
