Re: I wonder if the the "gang of 4" will be forming a barbershop quartet to sing that old INTC favorite "Itanium blues"? It sort of puts wbmw's perspective about INTC catching up into a different light. It still looks like INTC has a lot of AMD's dust to eat.
It sounds like just the 2.0GHz sku of Montecito will be delayed about 3 months. That puts as much a 10% performance on the table from a CPU that will offer 50% higher performance at the very least, and probably as much as 2.5x on some apps. Even the regular negative Inq spin isn't that bad:
The take home message is, high end late, not a big deal, low end fine, runs pretty good. The problem is known, and it will be solved, but it will then need a long qualification cycle before it comes out. Don't expect them this year.
By the way, even Intel said as much as 6 months ago that Montecito will be shipping to customers in 2005 and delivered in OEM systems in early 2006. The Inq just keeps on repeating the same message and making it sound as if the chip has had several delays. Since last year Intel has said H2 2005 (and in 2003, they said "2005"), so there hasn't been much of a delay overall - just a narrowing of guidance towards the late end of the range.
By the way again, this small hit to Montecito is in the high end space where AMD competes only slightly. The real battle is against Xeon, where Intel seems to be pulling in schedules (see Otellini's comments on Paxville in 2005).
