Jul 18, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --The Dow finished 65.84 points lower to close at 10,575, the Nasdaq fell 11.91 points to close at 2,145 and the S&P 500 lost 6.79 points to close at 1,221.

The markets closed out the trading session in the red today, despite declining oil prices and news of Whirlpool's (NYSE: WHR RT$) offer to buy Maytag (NYSE: MYG RT$) for $1.37 billion in cash and stock, as disappointing Q2 results from Citigroup (NYSE: C RT$) shook investor optimism over the current earnings season.

Volume was light with 1.58 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.31 billion on the Nasdaq. Decliners outpaced advancers today by a margin of 20:12 on the NYSE and by 19:12 on the Nasdaq.

In individual stories, Blue Dolphin Energy Company (Nasdaq: BDCO RT$) closed 25.71% higher after entering into gas and condensate transportation and handling agreements with Manti Operating Company. On the downside, Plumtree Software (Nasdaq: PLUM RT$) closed 15.87% lower after announcing an internal investigation and warning for Q2.

Tomorrow, traders will be watching for data on Housing Starts and Building Permits, which are due to hit the wires at 8:30 A.M.

Jul 18, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB) and Elan Corporation, plc (NYSE: ELN) announced today that SENTINEL, the Phase III TYSABRI add-on trial with AVONEX, achieved the two-year primary endpoint of slowing the progression of disability in patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. The addition of TYSABRI to AVONEX resulted in a 24 percent reduction in the risk of disability progression compared to the effect provided by AVONEX alone. Data from SENTINEL also demonstrated that the addition of TYSABRI to AVONEX led to a 56 percent relative reduction in the rate of clinical relapses compared to that provided by AVONEX alone. The reduction in relapse rate was statistically significant and sustained over the entire two-year study period.

NOTE: On February 28, 2005, Biogen Idec and Elan announced that they voluntarily suspended TYSABRI from the U.S. market and all ongoing clinical trials.

This order is an add-on to an existing indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (ID/IQ) contract, raising the total value of orders placed to date to $85.8 million. This contract was awarded to L-3 Westwood in September 2001 with ordering years ending in September 2007. This order brings the total number of units ordered to approximately 3,300, with final delivery of current funded orders in 2007. In consideration of current forward deployments of U.S. military assets worldwide, it is anticipated that this contract will grow to approximately $130 million.

The total value of the proposal represents a 21% premium over the price offered by Triton Acquisition Holding in their current agreement with Maytag. This transaction is valued at $2.3 billion in cash and stock (based on assumed debt of $969 million).

Jul 17, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --New River Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: NRPH) announced that its President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Randal J. Kirk, and its Chief Financial and Operating Officer, Krish S. Krishnan, have established stock trading plans.

Kirk's plans relate to the sale of New River stock by seven entities under his control. Under his plans, over the next 12 months these entities will sell up to one million shares, which comprise less than 9% of the holdings Kirk owns or controls. He will not sell any shares he owns personally. Krishnan's plan will provide for the exercise of options on and sale of up to 60,000 shares over the next 12 months.
