Sainthood for Christopher Columbus

I had no idea about this so when I went to look it up, it seems one of the major stumbling blocks against making him a saint was they couldn't determine where he was born??????? Not that he was a crazy, evil sociopath? More and more I get the feeling that I'm living in an alternate universe.
