"I'm curious, is there a Biblical or Scriptural basis for "anti-Christ"? And if so, what is the basis? I have no doubt Hitler would meet all necessary criteria...."

sarai...

Yes, the anti-Christ is mentioned several times both in a general sense (what John calls "the spirit of antichrist"), and in a more specific sense of a unique world leader that will arise as the final seven years of the Great Tribulation begins - he will do Satan's work and be indwelt by him. The most direct mentions are in 1st and 2nd John, then the evil world leader is discussed at length in the Book of Revelation where the final history of man on earth is prophesied.

While I think Hitler could be an example of the spirit of antichrist in that he was pure evil, murdered the Jews, and many other things, he could never have been the true and final anti-christ of the Last Days. The Anti-Christ does oppose God but rather than one like Hitler, he will appear to the world as being a wonderful man, beloved by all but true believers in God. He will probably be very charismatic, and a great leader, but inside his heart will be much more evil than Hitler. He will be first identified at the event that marks the onset of the seven year Tribulation, when he makes a treaty with Israel that brings world peace for a time and allows the Jews to rebuild the Temple and reinstitute sacrifices. At the midpoint of the seven year period, he will break that treaty and set himself up as God in the Temple (the desecration of abomination) and command all to worship him. He is the Beast of the book of Revelation.
