I was also told that Truman did not really know how big a bomb the nuclear bomb was and when he was told Nagasaki was to be a target he wanted assurances that they would hit only the military sites. Needless to say the bomb was not that discriminating. To this day I'm not sure if Truman at the time knew about the devastating fire bombing of Japan and the destruction it caused.
While there is much debate about whether the first bomb was necessary to be dropped I'm almost certain the second bomb was not meant for Japan but for a show to the Soviets. We wanted them to know we had more than one.
