They have resisted most social programs meant to bolster and make their lives better for the vast majority of citizens in America. I can't think of one social program proposed by conservatives that has helped the majority of Americans.
Why would they do that?
Since I consider myself to be somewhat a conservative, I offer one man's perspective on "Why would they do that?":
Because someone (the liberals, as I see it) are attempting to legislate the confiscation of what little wealth I possess.
It's not that I am not a charitable person, for I give to the homeless, several organized social groups, and, of course, the church. I do this freely and I suppose the percentage of my income that I give changes on my whim. If I think someone is needy through no fault of their own, I am likely to donate. If I think they got where they are through foolishness, bad attitudes, or pure worthlessness, they're not likely to get anything.
I am extremely resistant to someone else, and that includes my government, telling me what to do with my personal income.
I have little respect for people who do good things, then brag about them. They remind me of those who stand up to pray in their churches and carry on what seems like forever. Their God knew what they were going to say before they even thought it, so they're just praying for self edification. (Kinda' like I perceive the Liberal participants in our political process).
I certainly would never vote for anyone I perceive to be interested in re-distributing the wealth of those of my countrymen who possess it to those who do not. Let the liberal, social program loving, philanthropists give of their own wealth, then, when it's gone, I'll share more of mine.
That kinda' boils down to: "Don't try to tell me what to do with mine while you've still got yours!"
