TEL AVIV [MENL] -- Israel and the United States have been cooperating in developing a missile defense architecture against Iran's Shihab-3 intermediate-range missile.
Officials said the Israeli and U.S. militaries have sought to pool their missile defense resources to provide a regional defense against a Shihab-3 attack. They said the effort called for the linking of such U.S. assets as the PAC-3 lower-tier system, the upgraded PAC-2 and the Aegis sea-based missile defense system. Israel would contribute the medium-tier Arrow-2 system.
Israel and the United States have deployed most these missile defense assets during the current Juniper Cobra exercise, which began in Israel on March 10. The exercise, meant to end on March 31, has been based on a scenario that envisioned an Iranian missile attack on Israel or U.S. forces in the Middle East.
Officials said Juniper Cobra has sought to define the role of each of the Israeli and U.S. missile defense assets. They said the Arrow-2, with a reported range of 100 kilometers, would be responsible for the outer tier of defense against an intermediate-range missile.

Russia’s main arms exporter has signed a $300 million deal to sell jet fighter engines to China, the Associated Press news agency reported on Monday, quoting Russia’s Vedomosti daily.
The deal includes 100 AL-31 engines for China’s J-10 single-engine fighter and is one of Rosoboronexport’s largest this year, the Vedomosti daily reported.
A spokesman for Rosoboronexport refused to confirm or deny the report.
Russia has stepped up its sales of military hardware in recent years, with arms exports reaching a post-Soviet record of 5.8 billion last year.
China is the largest buyer of Russian military weaponry and equipment, and Russian-built Su-27 and Su-30 jet fighters make up the core of China’s air force. In 2003, China bought 53 such engines for the J-10, which is fitted with Russian “Zhemchug” radar.
The Soviet Union exported an estimated $20 billion in weaponry annually during the 1980s, but most was provided to Soviet allies on a credit or barter basis or even without charge.
