If that what is what the nation wants, that is what it will get. Don't forget though, Johnson decided not to run a second time while at war, if by 2004 we still have a ground war, Bush may very well lose the election. Hie "Patriotic" support is down to 63%, by 2004, if th economy is not back on track, and we are still engaged in bringing home body bags, I doubt that America will continue its support. War against terrorists that attacked our homeland, sure, against a despot that endangers its neighbors, but has yet to utter an aggressive threats against us, less so. We are not in the same position the Israeli were with their neighbors when day and night, the leaders of the neighboring countries promised to eradicate the state. We hear none of this from Iraq.
Historians are going to go back and identify the speech of "the axis of evil" as the roots of a lot of instability in the next few years, that was a very bad policy statement, in essence declaring war on three countries, two of which, we certainly do not intend to fight or change by force. The third, we should apply the same type of tactics we plan (if we have a plan) to apply to the other two.
