peg -- the enemy we are fighting has no "country" -- what it has are elements with in regimes that preach and support the "death to infidels" and that the USA is the "great Satan" -- in the ME there were three regimes who actively and openly supported these Jihadists as they waged war on the USA (and our ally, Israel) prior to 9/11 -- these countries were Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran -- [we have diplomatic relations with the other countries in the ME elements of which also support these Islamafascists -- we will deal with them as appropriate in the future] After 9/11, it was not possible to continue ignoring the danger these regimes posed to the USA.
No war plan survives the first days of battle -- the development of Iraq becoming the main battlefield of the WoT was not anticipated, but it is a "good" thing, in that the enemy from the surrounding regimes, which otherwise would be invisible, are traveling there to be killed or captured.
