It’s curious how stuff like that works at some companies.

You're talking about one of the oldest interview tips in the book: know as much as you can about the company to which you're applying.

Many applicants are full of themselves, but that's not what the employer wants to see.

I have an analogous, slightly more on-point story. My nephew is in the last year of his residency program at UCSF and interviewed for oncology fellowships at most of the top places. I had discussed Exelixis' drug with him, and he mentioned how surprised (and apparently impressed) some of the interviewers were that he was so well informed about a not-yet-approved drug.

He ended up choosing Hopkins so as to be close to his girlfriend. Not my first choice for him :)
