They saw how successful it was for Centrino and they are trying to slow or disrupt Intel's plan to extend it to servers and the desktop anyway it can. AMD can't possible match Intel in offering the whole package in one seamless unit so a PR oriented series of law suits is its desperate response.
I agree for the most part. Intel's platformization strategy is one that I think is under-appreciated by Wall Street at this time. It gives Intel an enormous competitive advantage by leveraging the combined strengths of many different business groups (including some that AMD has chosen to sell off in the past in an effort to compete more aggressively). And I think some people are starting to notice this.
