I already answered your question; it's circular, you enter a level of abstraction that the question becomes meaningless; i.e., if conserving good ideas is conservative, then there have been many, conserving the union. If you define liberal as new, there have been good new ideas and bad new ideas; similarly, there have been ideas that have been worth conserving and some not. It's circular.
