In an article published in TPM on October 4th, Ryan J. Reilly discusses the debate over voter ID laws that are taking place within the progressive community. He says that "[p]rogressive groups are taking the threat posed by new voting laws passed by mostly Republican legislatures across the country this year pretty seriously, and with good cause. A study put out this week by the Brennan Center claimed that up to five million voters could be kept from the polls due to the laws."
Mr. Reilly also quoted Eric Marshall, the Lawyers' Committee's manager of Legal Mobilization, who said at a recent convening that, "[w]e need to change the current [pro-voter ID] narrative and the current debate, because it's not conducive to our issues, which are expanding access to the ballot box."
