Reuters Select Company Focus
Nordstrom, Inc. (JWN): A luxurious retailer
When you think of luxury, what is more luxurious than gold? From the dawn of civilization, gold has been associated with wealth and power. Thousands of years later, we still hold it high regard. When you look at the history of the United States, there have been population shifts from the cities of the east to the wilds of the west in pursuit of fortunes from gold. So how come the Reuters Select Sentiment category screens, the ones that openly seek stocks favored by the herd, are up about 150 percent on average since 1/28/00, while the S&P 500 remains down a little more than 10 percent? Is it possible that popularity might actually be a legitimate investment criteria? Full Article

A customer service counselor shows you to a comfortable armchair and pours you a glass of wine to sip while you wait for him to fetch a selection of the finest apparel, matched to your size and taste. As feel-good shopping experiences go, this sure beats Wal-Mart! And since the luxury you see is the luxury you get, you know you're likely to be satisfied with your outing. Meanwhile, in an era where many investors have come to cherish investment ideas found through day-to-day life experiences, there's considerable appeal to owning shares of companies that provide top-quality goods and services.
