Those water barrels were oil drums which held oil for spraying trees. I know the guy who sprays the trees, so the drums were free to me.
A friend developed the idea the put the faucet out of the bottom of the drum to maximize water storage; most barrels have a faucet on the side about six inches from the bottom.
The hardest work came in building a foundation for the cinder blocks. I still need to put a two-inch pipe connecting each barrel, as the first barrel fills up too quickly and overflows.
I'll address that when I take the barrels down next month.
I learned a lot of gardening way back when I was a boy from my Grandmother, but I was just a casual gardener until five years ago. That's when I became convinced that there will be a financial meltdown. The garden is four times bigger than 2006.
My formula for garden is S-cubed plus water plus bees.
The S-cubed equals space, sun, and soil enrichment. Water is obvious and bees are needed for pollination.
Rainwater is much better than ice cold tap water and whatever it contains. The tepid water from those barrels are fine for the plants and vegetables.
I thought that I would have my ideal garden in five years; that has been increased to ten years, mostly because it takes so much time to get the perfect soil blend, not to mention the numerous raised beds.
Last year was dismal; this was a breakout year. I now have a 1,000 square feet of garden and that will increase to 1,250 once I take over my neighbor's front and back yard.
