I did two years in Algiers .. 'modern day' Algiers, if those words can be used together .... and I can not imagine what it must have been like 'back then'. Although judging from the condition of a lot of the buildings, it might have been much more accomodating back in WWII tomes, other than the combat of course ... because things were so 'run down' when I was there in the mid 80's. Of course, I was there after the French had left and taken with them all the infrastructure plans and blueprints ... The only way the Algerians knew for sure where a water main was located was when they broke it while digging. No sort of master plans or other documents left to reference, at all.

Of course, the majority of the population had no use for Americans when I was there ... and would throw rocks at us or spit at us. Some of the older ones, though, who had been around in the 'big one', treated us just fine.

It was two years I was glad I experienced, and was glad when it was over. "Modern" radical Islam has succeeded in taking the country hostage, basically, and effectively closing the borders to most of the outside world. Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia are all extremely beautiful places, with unlimited potential as tourist destinations, if Islamic society would permit it. The associated xenophobia, though, makes tourism an adventure only for the very bold.
