The markets closed out the trading session in the green today, despite rising oil prices, as buyers showed optimism ahead of key inflation and sales data due later in the week. The retirement of Morgan Stanley's (NYSE: MWD) embattled CEO Phil Purcell was the news of the day and kept many traders entertained on a relatively uneventful day.
Volume was light with 1.64 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.43 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers outpaced Decliners today by a margin of 19:14 on the NYSE and by a margin of 16:14 on the Nasdaq.
In individual stories, Cardiac Science, Inc. (Nasdaq: DFIB) closed 35.80% higher after expanding its multi-year strategic distribution agreements with GE Healthcare, a division of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE). On the downside, Proxim Corporation (Nasdaq: PROX) closed 65.63% lower after announcing that as part of the Company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, it entered into an asset purchase agreement whereby Moseley Associates, Inc. will acquire substantially all of its assets for $21 million.
Tomorrow, traders will be watching for data on Retail Sales, Retail Sales ex-auto, the PPI, and Core PPI, which are all due to hit the wires at 8:30 A.M

In this study, Genasense was administered daily for 7 days on weeks 1, 3 and 5, and rituximab was administered weekly for 6 weeks. Thirty-five patients who had failed a median of 2 prior chemotherapy regimens with or without rituximab were entered into this ongoing trial. To date, 6 patients have achieved a complete response, one of whom was refractory to prior rituximab therapy. Nine other patients have achieved a partial response for an overall response rate of 42%. Patients with the specific subset of follicular lymphoma showed a response rate of 56%. Twelve other patients have had stable disease. Side effects of the combination appeared qualitatively similar to that for rituximab alone, including but not limited to neutropenia, fever, infection, anemia and fatigue.

The Phase III study showed PARGLUVA 5 mg reduced A1C levels significantly more than pioglitazone 30 mg in patients with type 2 diabetes. Significant effects were also seen on triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. In the Phase II study at 104 weeks, patients who received PARGLUVA 5 mg had a change of -1.52% from baseline A1C (mean baseline of 7.92%) with a final mean A1C level of 6.4%.

(NYSE: MDT) announced results of a pilot study showing participants actively used real-time glucose readings to better control glucose fluctuations. Diabetes patients in the study used Medtronic's Guardian RT Continuous Glucose Monitoring System to monitor glucose levels throughout the day and night.

Jun 12, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --Merk (NYSE: MRK) said results from three recent Phase II studies announced today showed that sitagliptin phosphate (MK-0431), Merck's investigational medicine in a potentially new class of agents for the treatment for diabetes called DPP-IV inhibitors significantly improved glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes compared to placebo. In addition, sitagliptin was generally well tolerated, with overall adverse events similar to placebo.
