United States is giving Japan the means by which to be a significant player in the Malacca Straits.

More than one million tonnes of oil a year are shipped through the Malacca Straits.

Should the Malacca Straits ever be blocked, China would suffer enormously. If China gains significant influence in the region the Middle Kingdom can control the imports of Japan and Taiwan.

China to speed up navy upgrade

Updated: 2005-06-16 14:45

China will double its efforts to develop new types of battle ships and speed up upgrading of the navy's weapons systems.

The goals will be achieved by applying more information technology and raising the precision level of long-range strikes.

Vice Minister of the State Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, Zhang Guangqin, made these remarks at a press conference Thursday in Beijing.

Zhang says China follows the road of peaceful development, pursuing an independent foreign policy of peace as well as advocating non-provocative defense policies.

He notes China has a vast sea territory and it is the sacred duty of the Chinese navy to safeguard the country's marine sovereignty and interests.

The official added that China has so far no plans to build aircraft carriers.
