Give Buckwheat a try if you can. YOu can either feed it off to your chickens and dig the roots under, or dig the whole plant under. It works great as a green manure. If you need more info, just PM me and I will send you a blog link that can tell you more.

We have terrible clay soil here as well, it sounds like you are doing a great job of amending the horrible stuff. Over time you will see more and more improvement. Cover crops/Green manure can help a lot in changing the soil, making it nice and airy.

If you do raise your own pork, please consider raising 2 at a time and using them both or selling one of them. Pigs are such social animals that one lone pig will feel so alone! Pigs are great, they are fun to watch and they love attention.

Up here in late afternoon, we would often sit on the porch with a beer and watch the pig races. We would call it the Pig Channel and sometimes we even place bets as to what pig would win, lol. Lots of fun.

Have fun with your garden and chickens this summer and I am looking forward to more pictures!

DA, excel let me know he is also interested in Buckwheat, so I dug up the link for it from my old blog.

Hope this helps, you can also search the blog for "fall rye" which is the cover crop we use most often.

This morning we're getting ready for a 2 day fishing trip again, I hope we have a good catch!
