Most Americans still do not know the incredible brutality of both sides of the 1941-45 Pacific War.
Japanese people were routinely depicted as apes or monkeys by US propaganda. Both sides killed and tortured prisoners on a regular basis.
But here is the kicker.
A 1944 Gallup public opinion poll conducted at the height of the figthing showed that nearly a fifth of the US populace supported the idea of totally exterminating the Japanese race -- some 70 million people at that time.
That is what years of savage fighting and unrelenting racist hate propaganda can do.
