I believe it is required that public companies use the accrual method of accounting. So if they were using the cash method before the switch it is understandable that there would be a discrepancy. As far as I see it, the company didn't intentionally try to deceive investors. When I look at financial statements the last thing I base an investment decision on is media credits, just sayin.
