If they treated the debt as a real issue instead of a re-election issue, maybe they could make some progress on addressing the problem.

Inflation will be the way out for them eventually. I think you are already seeing western countries willing to let inflation run rather than increase interest rates.

I don't see the big deal on the August 2nd debt ceiling deadline as well. The long term debt problem is very bullish on gold and silver, but it will take a long time to play out.

Coin, the debt ceiling is not about default or "U.S. will not be able to pay it's debt". One can only default on loans and entitlements are not debt. The interest on the loans is easily covered by tax revenues almost 10 fold.

This is about paying on entitlements and Defense.

I would agree that volatility will increase with everything going on here in the US (debt ceiling, etc) and abroad (Eurozone crisis).

I bought a straddle on GLD today so if gold makes a significant move up or down I'll make money.

I bought Aug 20 options so I'm betting we'll have volatility in the next month.
