yes the root of the problem is that sylvester and many others actually think that sharon and the likud party does not want peace. The basic belief set is different. And without faith there can be no negotiation or solution.

It is quite clear that if you come to the table thinking the israelis believe in Greater Israel stretching into Iran as promoted by david dukes and the Arab league (jbennet knows where the map is and showed it to me, check out the rest of the site for a clue), and that the west bank is only a small tidbit of future conquests, then that is not a scenario which can possibly lead to peace. The propaganda now is reality and the reality is not believed.
Once you buy into it, everything follows: the israelis really started all the wars, they stole all the land from the people who had been there for 2000 years using high finance and chicanery and bullets, that Palestine can only be reborn from the sea to the river under moslem rule, that the palestians are victims of the Israelis and have been taken care of by the benevolent Arab states surrounding them etc etc. Everything that ever happened was simply a noble response to the evil of the zionists. And anyway, Allah says in the Koran to beware the jews because they are deceitful , so you can't trust anything they say, and since most of the israelis are jews, it must mean you can not trust anything the Israelis say.
Most of this, I guess, is started by both the arab press and the Israeli press themselves, who publish every wacko in the land, and the speilmeisters latch onto something and expand it into a vision. Its too bad the same detractors do not and cannot read the arab press, and do not read israeli newspapers. Its like the soviet Union telling everyone there that capitalism has failed and every citizen who has never been out of the country believing it. Can you imagine if the French think that some article written from podunk texas represents the thinking of the entire USA?
I have never understood why this part of the world elicits so much angst. Everbody just shrugged when the chinese killed 7 million people and floated their bodies into Hong Kong harbor as a warning during the cultural revolution. There are many other violent and painful areas, such as Kashmir, which simply pass by the western world. How many even remember the rape of bengladesh or the seizure of Tibet and Kashmir by the chinese? not even a whimper
