Or put it another way, it's the usefulness in facilitating worldly gains that made certain religions so sucessful to begin with. Speaking as a Christian myself, Judeo-Christian-Islamic religion IMHO is a very successful tool building internal cohesion and practice genocide to "other" tribes from the very beginning and throughout its history. The Hurons embraced a brand of "peace and loving" Christianity brought to them by the Jesuits (who apparently lost appetite for genocide by then after the Hugonot fiasco), and was promptly wiped out by Iroquois.
