China Producer Prices Rise 5.8 Percent On-Year in April, Up From 5.6 Percent in March

SHANGHAI, China (AP) -- China's producer price index, a leading indicator of future trends for consumer prices, rose 5.8 percent on-year in April, the National Bureau of Statistics reported Friday.
The April figure for the index, which measures the cost of goods used in production, was slightly higher than March's 5.6 percent, it said.

Higher prices for raw materials, fuel and power were main factores. Such inputs were 9.9 percent more expensive in April than they were a year earlier, the report said.

Top officials have warned that inflation remains a threat to China's robust economic growth, which has topped 9 percent for two years running.

However, despite soaring prices for many industrial inputs consumer inflation has been moderate in recent months. The consumer price index, which peaked at 5.3 percent in August, rose a modest 2.8 percent on-year in the first quarter of this year.
