May 12, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --The Dow finished 110.77 points lower to close at 10,189, the Nasdaq fell 7.67 points to close at 1,963, and the S&P 500 lost 11.75 points to close at 1,159.
The markets closed out the trading session in the red today, despite a jump in retail sales and a decline in oil prices, after weak Q1 results and a Q2 warning from Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) overshadowed previous optimism.
Volume was moderate with 1.99 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.73 billion on the Nasdaq. Decliners outpaced advancers today by a margin of 23:9 on the NYSE and by a margin of 19:11 on the Nasdaq.
In individual stories, CUNO Inc. (Nasdaq: CUNO) closed 29.24% higher after entering into a definitive agreement with 3M (NYSE: MMM) to be acquired in an all cash merger for $72 dollars per share (approx $1.35 billion) including the assumption of $60 million of existing net debt. On the downside, Proxim (Nasdaq: PROX) closed 55.00% lower after announcing it may have to seek bankruptcy protection if it can't raise money shortly.
Tomorrow traders will be watching for data on Export Prices ex-ag., Import Prices ex-oil, Business Inventories, and Consumer Sentiment. Export Prices ex-ag., Import Prices ex-oil, and Business Inventories are expected to hit the wires at 8:30 A.M. Consumer Sentiment is scheduled for 9:45 A.M.
