Cephalon Stops Parkinson's Study After Monitoring Group Says Results Won't Be Significant

FRAZER, Pa. (AP) -- Cephalon Inc. said Wednesday that it stopped a mid-stage trial of an experimental treatment for Parkinson's disease because an independent data monitoring committee concluded that it was unlikely to provide evidence of a significant effect.

The company said there were no safety concerns involving the trial, which it was conducting with Danish partner H. Lundbeck AS. The monitoring group made its determination based on interim results.

"While we are disappointed with results of the trial, our collaboration with Lundbeck will continue as a valuable part of our ongoing research program in neurodegenerative disorders," said Jeffry L. Vaught, Cephalon's senior vice president and president of research and development.

The study of the CEP-1347 drug was being run by the Parkinson Study Group, a nonprofit collection of Parkinson's disease experts from medical centers in the United States and Canada.

Cephalon shares closed down 22 cents at $45.57 on the Nasdaq, and later fell another 21 cents to $45.36 in after-hours trading.
