"...the monarchy – one of the most creative and underestimated political forces in modern history..."
I agree with his assessment but would apply it to the Arab world in general. This is a culture that has evolved in the harshest environment on the face of the earth, and developed a tough code of survival, to which they religiously adhere. Very alien to us, we of the West cannot relate to such a harsh value system and therefore tend to underestimate their patience, their ingenuity, their fierce independence, their determination and their ability to wreak havoc in the world if they so desire.
BTW, I have travelled extensively in the Arab world, and they are also one of the most hospitable people I have ever encountered. Interestingly enough, I have also had an Arab woman tell me that any wife disliked being the first and only wife because all the womanly duties then fell solely upon her shoulders, with no sister-wives to share the burden. Once one has experienced their barren, wind-swept desert home for oneself and been given an intimate glimpse into their lives, one begins to understand how and why their culture developed along the lines it has, as well as how and why America, following in the footsteps of the French and the British, has now become their most-hated enemy. Of course, when all is said and done, they are merely a gnat biting the rump of an elephant. They cannot win, but they will never accept defeat, either.
