Thinking further on this religious war, it is wrong to say that it began with Carter -- it is at least 15 centuries of warfare between various elements of the Christians and the Jews and the Muslims
Hap, I think it is wrong to put in the context of "15 centuries." Looking at the bigger picture, I think it probably "began" after WWI, when the British rewarded their tribal allies with kingdoms of their own. The US involvement dates from 1954, when we overthrew rather than trying to negotioate with a democratically elected regime that wanted to nationalize US oil businesses and we installed the "Shah." His excesses over the next 25 years--aided and abetted by the US as well as other western powers--created the environment in which Khomeini could come in and appear to many Iranians to be a plausible alternative to a western nation.
