(COMTEX) B: New pope's old car sells big on Internet ( United Press International )
BERLIN, May 06, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The new pope's
old car, a 6-year-old Volkswagon Golf, brought in almost 189,000 euros
($244,906) on the Internet auction site eBay.
That's more than 13 times what Benjamin Halbe, 21, of Olpe, Germany, paid
earlier this year for the car that once belonged to the man who became Pope
Benedict XVI. The winning bidder Thursday night was from Austin, Texas, the
Guardian said.
Halbe put the vehicle on eBay a week ago and was promptly bombarded more than
10,000 emails. He bought the car in January from a VW dealer in Siegen, Germany,
only discovering the identity of its previous owner when the registration papers
arrived. The dealer had said nothing about the previous owner.
The Pope bought the Golf when he was merely a German cardinal, Joseph Ratzinger.
His private secretary, Dr. Josef Clemens, who imported the vehicle from Germany
to Rome in 1999, drove it back to his home town of Siegen and sold it.
