What I meant by self administered was from the patients perspective.. In that in a hospital the patient won't have the knowledge per se that they have an option of an oral med for prophylaxis; so the hospital can continue to utilize a syringe over an oral med..

You may be right that Orals will be less expensive.. I am only assuming since Lovenox is the branded leader for DVT treatment, medical prophylaxsis, surgery PX and used for bridging that they would price the ORals competitive with Lovenox..

I don't know the prices for oral meds.

In the US market, Pradaxa costs about $8 per day (http://www.drugstore.com/pradaxa/bottle-60-150mg-capsules/qxn00597013554 ).

p.s. I presume you meant new oral anticoagulants in general rather than oral Xa inhibitors, specifically. (Pradaxa is a IIa inhibitor.)
