The only thing to add is that the ABC method of diagnosis is (finally) falling out of favor since there appear to be several papers showing that people can't actually use it to find early melanomas.

Hmmm, upon re-reading, I don't like the way I wrote that at all. Way too OTT from many perspectives. I'll owe a better story later - once I've resynched with the last 5+ years of papers.

a meaningful fraction is "atypical"

It's even worse than that - there are a fair number that even after a biopsy are ambiguous. Hence the FISH test that Abbott/Neogenomics are marketing.
