The markets closed out the trading session in the green today as surprisingly strong earnings from Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT), as well as news that the New York Stock Exchange plans to merge with Archipelago Inc (Amex: AX), drove the market higher.
Volume was heavy with 2.29 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 2.02 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers outpaced decliners today by a margin of 24:8 on the NYSE and by a margin of 22:8 on the Nasdaq.
In individual stories, Pozen Inc. (Nasdaq: POZN) closed 67.89% higher achieved statistical significance for all regulatory endpoints for Trexima in the second of the two Phase III pivotal trials. On the downside, BearingPoint (NYSE: BE) closed 32.05% lower after disclosures in its 8-K filing. There is no economic data due to hit the wires tomorrow.
