An Arab scholar argues that there is a Neo-Anti-Semitism in the Western World that is simply a shift from Anti-Jewish Semites and moved to now being movement Anti-Arab Semites. That is the Arabs are now the chosen victims just as Jews once were the chosen victims .
<< NEO ANTI SEMITISM

by Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, Syrian Minister of Expatriates

Damascus, June - Politicians and media people, nowadays in particular as borders between them became vague, exchange statements and articles about what happened and what is happening in Iraq, and whether it was possible to avoid a war that had proved on all levels to be disastrous and unjust for Iraqi people. Perhaps the most important of what was issued in this regard was the American Secretary Of State Colin Powell's declaration that the information he received about weapons of mass destruction and the alleged mobile chemical laboratories in Iraq, on which he presented a detailed survey in the Security Council early 2003, were not accurate: "It turned out that the information were inaccurate, wrong, and sometimes deliberately misleading… therefore I am disappointed and regretful." The American Secretary of States admitted that before the war on Iraq the Central Intelligence Agency, CIA, and other government institutions deliberately mislead the administration and the public opinion about the alleged Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.

But the important question that should be pondered in such a case is who are the people who deliberately gave misleading information and what were their objectives? Is it not very likely that they could give other misleading information about other issues and other countries and thus lead the United States towards some disastrous ventures incurring more calamities on the world? It is not a phenomenon that could be bypassed when misleading information, deliberately so or not, is delivered to the decision makers of the world's military and economic superpower and gets adopted by the administration of that only superpower as a basis to wage wars against nations, occupy countries, consequently commit war crimes, violate people's rights and sovereignty and violate international legitimacy. Such a phenomenon should be questioned and investigated, otherwise the whole world would be in real chaos.

One media event that approaches Powell's declaration in its implications is the New York Times editorial published on May 26, 2004 and entitled "Time and Iraq." In their piece the editors admitted that a lot of the information they published about Iraq before the war were taken from secret apparatuses that depended on defective information. Such defective and inaccurate information however found its way to a powerful and reliable media. The article confirms that the editors in the New York Times "relied in their information on agents and some members of the American Administration were keen to confirm such information to create the justifications" that the neo-conservatives sought after to invade Iraq. In order to find such justifications, the editors confirm that "unreliable information found their way to the front pages whereas the other information that refuted the former were not published, or were deliberately published late and in places that would not catch the readers' attention, at a time when they should have been published on the front page."

There is no doubt that the American Secretary of State's statement along with what he declared about the media pre-coordination between the Bush administration and media institutions to pave the way for invading Iraq, show that there was a previous plan schemed by the Neo-cons to wage war against the Arabs, and whose ultimate victim were Iraq and Palestine. Trumped-up information and intensive media coverage were prepared to create justifications for that war even though the experts and the well-informed insisted that such information were false and unfounded.

Most dangerous of all is that this very pattern is repeated in front of our eyes whether through the systematic physical torture crimes that Iraqi prisoners are subjected to in Abu Ghrayb and other prisons, the killing of innocent civilians on the hands of mercenary foreign snipers in Fluja, Al-kufa and Karbalaa or the bombing of a wedding in a safe village in the desert. The pattern continues with rapping Iraqi captives in front of their husbands and brothers, torturing Iraqi scientists to death, destroying thousands of Palestinian houses, killing hundreds of innocent children and women, assassinating civilians, displacing families, and imposing a murderous tragedy on a whole nation; a tragedy whose like humanity haven's witnessed since the defeat of Nazism in World War II.

Thoughtful observation of the happenings in Palestine and Iraq shows that the issue at essence is not an issue mistake in information sources because the American Intelligence and American Administration are not that naïve. It neither is failure in media courage and verifying facts because American media apparatuses are not that feeble. The issue is " deeper and more dangerous than this and that." It is a phenomena where western anti-Semitism is transforming from its conventional form into a new one where in the twenty first century the Arabs have been officially chosen to be the new victim, one country after the other, one people after the other; falling victims to hatred, killing, ethnic cleansing, torture, and massacres under the pretext of a multitude of reasons and justifications including terrorism. They are not much different from the pretexts used in the past, and cannot conceal from the observant researcher that at their very essence they are but different expressions to anti-Arabism and hostility to Arab culture and existence. Abu Gharib is a case in point, another is the wedding massacre in Iraq, another is the horrible crime against the people in Rafah, all but few examples showing beyond doubt how the Neo-Cons have modified their grandfathers' anti-Semitism into a systematic campaign of hatred against Arabs.

Evidence reveals that the physical and psychological torture to which prisoners at Abu Gharayb were exposed was not for the purpose of extracting information. Photos, films and testimonies clarify that the perpetrators were standing for souvenir photos after torturing the victims or killing them. Today, it has been proved to all that exercising torture in jails is not an individual isolated case, nor those responsible are only a few, it rather is a policy in which everyone was involved, and where everyone has taken a part in blacking it out, denying it as a war crime, and hiding other sides of it such as the destiny of thousands of prisoners whose names were not registered, and whose bodies were buried in hidden graves. Such policy departs from a racist condescending view of Arabs, and therefore does not consider Iraqis to be human beings equal in feelings, comprehension and sensitivity to westerners.

There is no doubt that those who prepared and misled their people to wage the war against Iraq are the same people who believe in that racist view towards Arabs and are waging a war of eradication against Palestinians, and supervising the persecution methods secreted by the neo-anti-Semitism in its campaign against Arabs. If this is not true, then how could American planes drop bombs on a peaceful wedding party, killing forty children, men and women, and even with the testimonies of living survivors published in the British Guardian the Bush Administration still refuses to apologize for its generals' deliberate killing of innocent children. Would the Bush Administration adopt a similar policy towards any other any other nation in the world? Would American media keeps the crime in total blackout if the victims were not Arabs? Then, the New York Times editors who are now apologizing for the bad coverage before the war continue in ignoring Arabs' agony and the massacres committed against them in Palestine and Iraq. This is because an Arab life today is not equal in worth to a western life. Is this not the exact same essence of anti-Semitism that persecute, kills, and displaces Semitic people just for being Semitic, kills their children and women and displaces and violates their properties and countries just because they are Arabs.

It is no coincidence at all that the image of the old Palestinian searching the ruins of her house looking for her medicaments, which reminded Youssi Lapead, Israeli minister of justice, of his grandmother's image, an old helpless woman, on the days of Nazi persecution of Jews. This image not only applies to the Minister's grandmother's, it is the reality of thousands of families in Palestine and Iraq suffering the tragedies, cleansing, and racial discrimination that has nothing to do with the war on terrorism or with the security of this side or that one.

Into this campaign of hatred fall all the racist points of view such as those expressed by Benjamin Eilon, the Israeli minister of tourism, on May 26 in the Herald Tribune :" there is no land for Palestinians here, let them leave to Jordan." Another is Doglas Faith's call - Israeli deputy minister of defense for political planning- for Israel to deny Oslo and keep the occupied territories. In the same line of thought falls Bush's denial, president, administration, and war generals, of the war crimes being committed, and his continuous justification of Israeli crimes against Palestinian children and demolishing their houses as an act of "self-defense." All of this and many other similar sayings and acts are nothing but part of a mentality and a policy of a neo-anti-Semitism targeting Arabs. It is a mentality and a policy that is waging war of elimination, committing massacres, torture , rape and punishments in Palestine and Iraq systematically and in harmony with this new campaign of hatred.

Most important of all is that the true nature of the so-called free press has been revealed, and now it is imperative that it should come down to reality to discover by itself the victims of neo-anti-Semitism and the systematic criminal campaigns of torturing Arabs, eliminating them, violating their rights and lands, and distorting their history and culture. Jan Luc Jodar was surprised that no Israeli has drawn the similarity he himself firmly depicted in his movie "Our Music" between conventional anti-Semitism practiced by the Nazis and plucking the Palestinians out of their homes, even though , and by his own description he's Jewish-identified in cinema. I am even more surprised that no Arabs has drawn this similarity.>>

Koizumi Apologizes: Japan buckles under Dragon’s glare

Tensions between the regional rivals also have been heightened by disagreements over gas resources in disputed seas and new Japanese textbooks that critics say gloss over Japan's wartime offenses. Many Chinese believe Japan has never truly shown remorse for atrocities committed during its pre-World War II invasion of China.
