The number of U.S. visitors to eBay Inc.'s (EBAY) sites inside and outside the U.S. declined 5% in March from the year-ago period, according to one company that tracks the number of people visiting Internet sites.

March marked the ninth consecutive month of a year-over-year decline. The number of visitors was 65.9 million in March, down from 69.7 million in the year-ago period, according to data released this week from comScore Media Metrix.

EBay had 58.3 million U.S. visitors to its sites in June 2004, flat compared with June 2003. The percentage has declined every month since, bottoming at a 14% year-over-year decline in January and February.

There were 62.4 million visitors in January 2005, compared with 72.6 million in January 2004. EBay had 62 million visitors in February 2005, compared with 72.2 million in February 2004, according to comScore.

EBay spokesman Hani Durzy declined to comment on the numbers for the first three months of this year. In general, the numbers the online auction company pays the most attention to include registered users, active users, the number of listings, conversion rates and others, Durzy said.

EBay plans to report first-quarter results on Wednesday.
