When J6P finally takes the plunge that's when the big money pulls out. It has happened so many times before and it seems J6P never learns. Instead he continues to be taken to the cleaners. Unfortunately I think this will be another one of those times.
I am far from an expert on retail sales, but the article you posted said that sales for the day after Thanksgiving were up around 12%. Just a quick mental calculation would suggest that with the holiday selling season a week shorter than normal, the sales rate would need to keep up that pace (or a little better) just to break even with last year. Perhaps I am looking at it wrong.
Why does a one-day double-digit sales growth rate get you so excited? Near as I can tell, everything was on sale, so there won't be much in the way of profits on those sales.
Plus, many consumers do know that there are six less shopping days this year compared to last and they were determined to get out and shop early, not only for the bargains, but for the best availability.
