I haven't checked the rules at IB lately, maybe they allow you to open the long put trade but close it for you before expiry.

You can't choose not to exercise an ITM option, the OCC does it for you. I think they now autoexercise options that are five cents in the money or even less. It used to be 25 cents itm 10-15 years ago, IIRC.
