imo, you might have taken pause .. one party leans liberal, the other more and more to the extreme wrong right .. there are many differences between the two parties and way back then it seemed to me that was simply what the reductionist comment related to.
Think .. attitudes to size, worth and merit of government .. payment and levels of income tax .. Bush tax cuts extension, particularly on the rich .. attitudes toward SS, medicare, abortion .. oh! .. here are some more ..

Democratic party views Republican Party views Pro-choice, woman has right to choose anti-abortion wants to end bush tax cuts want to keep bush tax cuts and expand on them Want us out of Iraq, Want to keep us in iraq for 100 years want to protect SS and medicare want to get rid of medicare will appoint justices to SCOTUS that Want to appoint justices in line with Scalia, Alito, Roberts will protect rights Want to negotiate with those countries that "either you are with us or you are against us" we have problems with (you know like Reagan, nixon, LOL)
Want to get us back on sound fiscal footing spend and borrow
