Quasar owed Apex a lot of money, and I would guess still does. A very serious amount. Mr. Bradley actually tried to hand Quasar to Apex to settle at one point, shortly before Mr. DiGenova's coup d'état. Apex puked.
Apex was never a merger or aqusition candidate. Apex was a creditor.
Maybe Mr. Zell found out what was owed to Apex by "Quasar Aircraft" (one of the wholly owned subsidiarys that seemed to fade from view as the scam continued) and was "pretty pissed", as you put it.
