I agree, on a personal level, manufacturing jobs were overpaid and - due to union interference - largely unproductive. And I do agree that people need to be able to adapt and adjust.

My arguement was that the country as a whole must have a manufacturing base. A strong one.

The theory of economic progression does not preclude the need for the previous iteration. It simple means that an economy can become more focused on the next one. Agriculture, for instance, must remain a viable American industry. Mad cow disease is a prime example as to why. You can not import milk, either. It is rather hard to enforce FDA policy in another country.

While these industries do go down in importance, this is due to the progression of the society and the growth of other areas. It should not mean the abandonment of necessary industries.

How about defense? Should America outsource its defense industry?

My point is that these things can only go so far before the costs outwiegh the benefits. Economic theory can only help so far in this regard.
