Paul, that is the kind of accident I am trying to prevent by not shorting at all. If I am wrong on a stock I lose about 2% of my folio, maybe even as high as 5% if a really doubled up hard. I get about one such accident a year (of the 2% size...) and I can easily live with it since I always have few that are double baggers in the year (COO, COCO, some Q and CCMP just reached those levels here) the rest is gravy. If I were to short, I would expose myself to that kind of accident. One thing with accidents, they are "accidental" but they have a non zero probability of occurring...

Paul, If I may ask - what is the "rest of the story"? As you say in a future post: "When you short stocks, you either understand how to manage your account or you will be history in no time.."

My question is, on ADSP, why weren't you history, why didn't the firm cash you out to zero, who covered the several million dollars due when the stock was bought back?

Very instructive example, BTW - thanks.
