Treasury Market Hangs Near Session Highs on Data -Free Day

The market has continued to hold the early bid. Hopes for anything big and policy related out of Federal Reserve Chief Greenspan's GSE testimony were dashed. Any impact derived from the stern tone taken in the chairman's prepared opening speech was tempered by the fact Dow Jones Newswires "obtained" and reported portions of the aforementioned text last night. EuroZone bonds were also better as mid-tier economic releases did not improve and interest rates are expected to remain on hold. The rate surprise of the day was the lack of action by the Australian Reserve Bank, which unexpectedly did not add a 25 basis point bump to the benchmark rate. The curve sloped quietly flatter early as options seemed to steal some focus (please see 10:55ET comment for more). The dollar has rebounded since hitting an overnight low of 1.2910 versus the euro. The overnight weakness in the dollar may have been the result of rumor that Russia and the Paris Club may have struck a deal that would result in Russia paying the $43B it owes the group ahead of schedule. The deal raised speculation Russia would need to buy euros. Gold trading higher on speculation the US will veto IMF bullion sale. US House Representative Saxton said Congress will block any attempt to sell the IMF's 3,217 metric tons of gold, according to Bloomberg. The 10-yrs are currently +08/32nds yielding 4.436%.
