Interesting is a very good choice of words. Spreads are not made by market makers. They are made by people who offer to buy a stock at a certain price. Want to close the spread ? All you need do is bid wack the stock. Put in a bid just above the bid price and the spread will start to close.
There are millions of things you may blame market makers for but that is not one of them.
