louis: Re: Your saying the OQAM technology is layer 1. Is Ikanos not being considered as a competitor?
Yes, all xDSL transmission methods are layer 1 technologies. Ikanos is most definitely a competitor. Furthermore, when Ikanos first launched its SmartLeap chipsets, a question was posed about this competition in the RAQ. Ketch lied about the Ikanos technology by saying that it uses multiple pairs. That's not true. All Ikanos products are single-pair products. They do not have a bonded-pair technology. Ikanos' technology has advanced significantly since then as well.
Is it possible that NVEI truly has something unique...
Not possible at all. Embarq is composed 80% of ANI's PowerStream technology (according to the company), and ANI has licensed that same technology to two other companies besides NVEI. Thus, 3 separate companies use the technology besides NVEI. So, by definition, it cannot be unique.
However, I suspect you mean "can it do what they say it can". I suppose it is possible, but we have not seen any evidence to date. More to the contrary, we have seen copious evidence that the technology can't do what they claim it can.
Additionally, the competitive state-of-the-art has caught up NVEI's claims. Ikanos' new Fx chipset is more than twice as fast as NVEI's claims over relatively short distances, and the reach of the FX chipset has already been demonstrated in the DSL Olympics to be comparable to the NVEI claims. They have not yet published the distance data for their new FX chips, but if they are any improvement over the last stepping, then Ikanos will have NVEI's claims beat hands-down at every distance.
...or is it more likely that the Hellosoft CEO is embellishing the product since he now has shares of NVEI and is looking to unload the shares if the price goes higher.
I think this is far more likely. An endorsement by someone paid by the company carries little weight. Technical-savvy investors understand that, as is evidenced by the lack of significant share price movement from the announcement.
We have seen similar endorsements over the years by Greaves, Propp, Chen, Sammartino, etc. Without any further evidence to the contrary, I have to colclude that this is yet another paid endorsement that really has no meaning.
