A well drilled as part of an appraisal drilling program which is carried out to determine the physical extent, reserves and likely production rate of a field.
They may be seeing a bright spot on the seismic and calling it water contact, when really it may be something else. The only way to know true reserves is to drill and find the top & bottom of the oil.
