Samsung announced last week that the company is looking sell more than 60 million smartphones in 2011, 40 million or three times as many as 2010. Samsung anticipates the majority of its sales to come from their Galaxy portfolio of phones.
This announcement bodes well both for Samsung and for the application makers designing for their platform. Applications on smartphones have already begun replacing consumer electronics, particularly standalone PND GPS Units.
As the smartphone and tablet market continues to grow with projections of up to 1 billion by 2013, developers that entered into this market early and managed to deliver popular apps and build a strong user base will have a first mover advantage.
Among these companies is GTX Corp (OTCBB: GTXO), a Los Angeles based company featured on World Market Media’s NanoCap Index. For GTX, which offers 17 GPS applications across a global user base in over 100 countries on six platforms, including Android OS, the platform employed by Samsung Galaxy phones and the bada OS which is Samsungs proprietary platform. The strengthening of the smartphone industry and Samsung’s projected sales are excellent news for the industry and developers. Also working to their advantage is the announcement by Shin Jong-kyun, the head of Samsung's mobile business division, who, confirmed to The Korea Times at the Consumer Electronic Show that the company also intends to introduce more touch-screen tablets this year.
Samsung’s announcement reinforces conclusions that could be drawn from last week’s tablet-heavy Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas as well as a five-year forecast released last week from Forrester Research indicating tablet computers were predicted to grow as quickly as MP3 players in the United States. Forrester projected that by 2015, more than 82 million Americans will own tablet computers.
“As we look ahead into 2011 and 12, we clearly see the proliferation of these devices will create unprecedented opportunities for developers”, said Patrick Bertagna CEO of GTX Corp who attended the CES show. “These opportunities tower over what we saw in the late 90’s during the dot com era, imagine being able to “reach” billions of people all over the world with one push of a button, that is a very powerful concept.”
These are exciting times and the future of this rapidly growing market will be very interesting to watch. As this market continues to grow by the millions with new smartphones and tablets scheduled for launch practically every month this year, we can safely say the larger the market the wider audience a company like GTX Corp can reach.
