Korean Stocks Open Higher in Thin Trade

Asian markets traded higher Monday in the first trading day of 2011, but volume was thin with many major markets closed for a public holiday.

The FTSE CNBC Asia 100 Index [.FTFCNBCA 6947.67 6.52 (+0.09%)] traded mostly flat.

South Korean shares rose 0.62 percent to open the year at 2,063.69 points, with gains led by tech issues such as Samsung Electronics.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) [KR;KSPI Unavailable ()] climbed 0.48 percent to 2,060.90 points.

Markets in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China and Vietnam are closed for the New Year holidays.
